2,7M contract with ITER – ISQ
ISQ has been awarded a new 2,7 M€ contract, to perform destructive and non-destructive tests in materials and mock-ups for the nuclear fusion reactor ITER, in Cadarache, France.

This international mega-project, bringing together the European Union, the U.S.A, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea and India, aims to reproduce the nuclear fusion process at the centre of stars, paving the way for the creation of low ecological footprint, safe power plants.

When in operation, the ITER reactor will have, side-by-side, temperatures near the absolute zero and temperatures higher than the Sun’s surface and it will produce copious amounts of neutrons. Given these challenging conditions, materials testing will be of fundamental importance for the success of the project. This contract marks an important step in ISQ’s participation in ITER, adding to the ongoing Engineering and Inspections contracts.

The Portuguese industry had, by the end of 2019, locked the 6th highest return of all EU countries with the domestic agency Fusion for Energy, which is notable for a country without nuclear power plants. Portugal clearly leads the pack of non-nuclear countries at ITER, having amassed close to 60 M€ in contracts since 2008.
