ReportEU: selected six reporting projects
The first edition of ReportEU (#ReportEU), organised by the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal, received 23 applications from students from various parts of the country. Of these, six teams and respective reporting projects were selected, involving 18 students of journalism and media and six professors-coordinators from five higher education entities in Lisbon, Coimbra, Viseu and Setúbal.

These six teams will develop, between January and April 2021, reports on topics of a very varied European dimension, with the aim of giving them momentum on the media agenda through protagonists and relevant and original angles. They will have access to the practical mentoring of professional journalists and, in the end, three reports will be chosen by the team of mentors and partners to be disseminated by the media that associate with the initiative: Public, Renaissance and TVI.

The remaining 17 applications will be invited to develop candidate reports with the support of Reporters in Construction (REC).

ReportEU is an initiative of the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal whose first edition was launched in November 2020 in collaboration with the Reporters in Construction (REC) and aims to contribute to the practical training of future journalists in the reporting format and journalistic coverage of European themes, further fostering the debate and action to increase media literacy.

Background:

ReportEU, an initiative of the Representation of the European Commission in Portugal whose first edition was launched in November 2020 in collaboration with the Reporters in Construction(link is external) (REC), is born with the aim of giving university students the opportunity, in particular journalism and media, to create reports on topics that address a European dimension and that are relevant and innovative. Through practical experience during the training course, it allows them to train what it is to develop a journalistic report, with access to professional mentoring, and to better understand how the European Union works and what resources it provides for journalists and citizens. It also seeks to stimulate interdisciplinarity, knowledge of the reality of other Member States and media literacy, specifically on European issues.

The three reports considered best by the team of mentors and partners will be disseminated by the media that associate with the initiative. The evaluation criteria include: 1) innovation of the theme, angles and/or formats; 2) the quality of implementation and presentation; 3) the relevance of the content; 4) the impact of a greater link between citizens and the EU; 5) the inclusion of issues, protagonists and/or stories from at least three different EU Member States (it may or may not include Portugal). All projects should be implemented following good environmental sustainability practices, using the opportunities provided by digital tools and respecting the fundamental rights and values of the European Union.
