ERC Seeks Feedback from the Scientific Community
Best Practices under COVID-19 and Nominations for Breakthroughs of the Year

Best practices under COVID-19

The Scientific Council’s Gender Issues Working Group (GIWG) has been discussing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on researchers productivity. As announced last week, the Scientific Council has also decided on some measures for the ERC Work programme 2022 to monitor the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ERC applicants’ research productivity. In the meantime, the GIWG has expressed its wish to collect a list of best practices of other such measures already implemented across Europe. To that end, the GIWG members would be pleased if you could share with them any studies/information/data related to measures already implemented in your countries and related to the impact of COVID-19 on researchers productivity. Any such information you could share from your national research funding organisations and/or Host Institutions would be much appreciated.

Please send best practices information by 10 June to Severina Shopova, Secretary of the GIWG: Severina.SHOPOVA@ec.europa.eu (cc: me).

Call for nominations – breakthroughs of the year

A call to nominate the scientific breakthroughs of the year has been launched by the organisers of the Falling Walls conference in November.

The European Research Council has cooperated with the Falling Walls Foundation for several years. Falling Walls aspires to showcase, discuss and celebrate breakthroughs in science and society. They have made it their goal to empower breakthrough thinking across the globe in order to tackle our world’s most pressing problems.

Universities and research organisations who want to nominate an ERC grantee should complete the short nomination form no later than 15 June at falling-walls.com/breakthroughyear.

The distinguished juries, chaired by Helga Nowotny, President Emeritus of the European Research Council, will identify the most impressive work. The ten Science Breakthroughs of the Year 2021 will be presented live on stage in Berlin and broadcast via livestream to a global audience. To get an idea, please take a look at last year’s breakthroughs and the brilliant minds behind the work.
