The Global Innovation Summit (GIS) and the Portuguese Chairmanship of EUREKA (1 July 2021- 30 June 2022)

The Global Innovation Summit (GIS – https://www.gis2021.com/), happening in Graz, Austria, from 18th to 20th May 2021, is an international meeting place for businesses, innovators, researchers, and funding experts to network, share knowledge and develop new business ideas. Focused on Green Transition, Digital Transformation and Post COVID, this event will give participants the chance to share their journey, knowledge and ideas for innovation. In a varied program, including people from different backgrounds and expertise, the AIR Centre will be responsible for a session happening on the 18th, at 16:00 CET, entitled “Space-Ocean-Earth Interactions for a sustainable, innovative and safe society”.

This aims to be a place for addressing challenging questions related to the emerging issues where research and innovation on Space, Ocean and Earth systems interactions will play a key role on the generation of new knowledge, technologies, and businesses across disciplines, stimulating institutional innovation in public and private entities, to better guide a common sustainable, digital and safer future for society at large.

The Portuguese Chairmanship of EUREKA will start on the 1st July 2021 and last until 30th June 2022, with an inspiring motto “Innovation for a Greener, Digital and Healthier Planet through a collaborative approach”. This coincides with the co-presidency by Portugal of the Council of the European Space Agency (ESA), during the year of 2021, and follows the Presidency of the Council of European Union (January-June 2021). During this third time that Portugal assumes the presidency of EUREKA, the country aims to increase the network’s global footprint, focusing on the Atlantic and boosting collaboration with countries in Africa and Latin America. This way, the Portuguese Chairmanship is set on contributing to the success of EUREKA as a major tool to promote research and innovation, strengthening the bottom-up, open and flexible nature of the network by building up on the work done by the Austrian Chairmanship. Miguel Bello and Emir Sirage from the AIR Centre will be the incoming chair and NPC chair of the Portuguese Presidency of EUREKA from July onwards.

The EUREKA network, founded in 1985, is an international collaborative network for R&D&I, supporting innovative product development, processes or services, to productivity and competitiveness of the European industry. Targetting, mainly, enterprises, the projects may also involve entities from the scientific and technological system. Organisations and companies can apply through Eureka programmes and access funding and support from national and regional ministries or agencies for their international R&D projects. On 2021 EUREKA celebrates its 35th birthday which prompted a COVID-safe series of podcasts to celebrate, available here.
